At Seneca Village Montessori School, we strive to nourish the mind, body, and spirits of our students. Part of this nourishment process is culminated through our school garden, yoga, and meditation.
The Seneca Village Montessori School Garden reconnects students with the natural world and the true source of their food, and teaches them valuable gardening and agriculture concepts. These skills integrate with several subjects, such as math, science, art, health, physical education, and social studies, as well as several educational goals, including personal and social responsibility.
There are numerous mental benefits to the Seneca Village School Garden:
Adding mindfulness techniques, such as yoga and meditation, to our curriculum, benefits our children’s mental well being. Through breathing practices, yoga postures, deep relaxation, and meditation, our children can experience the connection between mind and body.
Our yoga and meditation practices have mental benefits in the following ways:
A healthy body needs an adequate and balanced supply of nourishment from food, sunlight, exercise. Our garden will help students obtain body nourishment, because the garden is:
Our garden is likely to transform children’s food attitudes and habits. School gardening, when combined with our healthy lunch program and nutritional education, encourages more healthful food choices.
Yoga exposes children to movement. It comes with little risk, and still is a form of physical exercise.
Yoga can improve the body in different ways:
Gardening can offer a sense of school and self pride and spirit. The Seneca Village School Garden offers a way of helping our children to identify with the school and to feel proud of their own individual contribution. Children will know which plants they helped to grow, and they feel proud of them. This can improve children’s attitudes toward the school, and themselves.
Meditation is an act of contemplation, and reflection, and serves 2 purposes: to gain tranquility, and to gain insight. Meditation helps children develop a still and tranquil spirit, by cutting through the racing thoughts and internal dialogue. The main benefit of meditation on the spirit is that it increases the acceptance of oneself. Through meditation, students will connect with their inner self. Our children will meditate to focus on 3 spirits:
