"Where Cultural Knowledge & Academic Excellence Meet"

At Seneca Village Montessori School, we strive to nourish the mind, body, and spirits of our students. Part of this nourishment process is culminated through our school garden, yoga, and meditation.

The Seneca Village Montessori School Garden reconnects students with the natural world and the true source of their food, and teaches them valuable gardening and agriculture concepts.   These skills integrate with several subjects, such as math, science, art, health, physical education, and social studies, as well as several educational goals, including personal and social responsibility.

There are numerous mental benefits to the Seneca Village School Garden:

  • Students learn focus and patience, cooperation, teamwork and social skills
  • They gain self-confidence and a sense of "capableness" along with new skills and knowledge in food growing — soon-to-be-vital for the 21st century
  • Garden-based teaching addresses different learning styles and intelligences; our non-readers can blossom in the garden!

Adding mindfulness techniques, such as yoga and meditation, to our curriculum, benefits our children’s mental well being. Through breathing practices, yoga postures, deep relaxation, and meditation, our children can experience the connection between mind and body.

Our yoga and meditation practices have mental benefits in the following ways:

  • Children can better regulate their emotions and behaviors in healthy ways
  • Children tend to be less reactive, more optimistic, and better able to focus, concentrate, and interact with their peers
  • Children  can maximize their focus, attention, and participation

A healthy body needs an adequate and balanced supply of nourishment from food, sunlight, exercise.  Our garden will help students obtain body nourishment, because the garden is:

  • A source of food for improving children’s diet and nutrition
  • A source of physical activity
  • The source of ingredients for our school meals
  • A place where the children can bask in, and enjoy the sun

Our garden is likely to transform children’s food attitudes and habits.  School gardening, when combined with our healthy lunch program and nutritional education, encourages more healthful food choices.

Yoga exposes children to movement.  It comes with little risk, and still is a form of physical exercise.
Yoga can improve the body in different ways:

  • Foster physical flexibility, core strength
  • Through regulated breathing, yoga can improve respiratory function
  • Can increase cardiovascular health
  • Provides a mechanism for gross motor development

Gardening can offer a sense of school and self pride and spirit. The Seneca Village School Garden offers a way of helping our children to identify with the school and to feel proud of their own individual contribution. Children will know which plants they helped to grow, and they feel proud of them. This can improve children’s attitudes toward the school, and themselves.

Meditation is an act of contemplation, and reflection, and serves 2 purposes: to gain tranquility, and to gain insight. Meditation helps children develop a still and tranquil spirit, by cutting through the racing thoughts and internal dialogue. The main benefit of meditation on the spirit is that it increases the acceptance of oneself.  Through meditation, students will connect with their inner self.  Our children will meditate to focus on 3 spirits:

  • The spirit of integrity.   “I am Royal, I will respond in a manner of integrity”
  • The spirit of courage. “Courage is needed to face  the unknown, face adversity, and to be one with my people.
  • The spirit of tenacity. “I am heir to the kingdom, not a victim, but victorious”
